Why the Middle East Has Suddenly Exploded (and what to do about it)

What just happened? Netanyahu returns from his speech in the US, and suddenly war threatens on all sides. Netanyahu was soft-pedaling his response to Biden’s ceasefire proposal, but now he’s blowing it all up.

You don’t have to look far. Trump has been using the wars in Ukraine and Gaza as symbols of failure of the Biden administration. “Never would have happened under me.” He blocked the bipartisan agreement for control of immigration so that the problem would persist for the election. He wants the greatest mess possible in the Middle East. In return he’s ready and eager to support the dictatorial takeover of Israel.

Blinken may have been surprised by the assassinations (Biden must have been furious), but you can bet they were discussed with all consequences at Mar-a-Lago.

8/10/2024: This article deserves a postscript:

The situation as described reflects Trump’s poll results at the time of Netanyahu’s trip. We’re in a more fluid situation now. Netanyahu will follow what serves him. If you want peace in Gaza, there is one definite right way to get there: help change those polls!
